Deceased expectant mother's family compensated

Nakaseke District local government has commenced the compensation process to a family that lost a mother and her unborn baby while giving birth at Nakaseke Hospital.
The compensation process by the hospital follows a ruling by Justice Benjamin Kabiito of the High Court in April this year, who found Dr Davis Mubeezi liable for the death of Irene Nanteza as he never administered emergency obstetric care that the deceased needed, which omission led to her slow death in 2012. She was left unattended to for eight hours.
But following a court process against Nakaseke District local government, the court awarded the deceased's family Shs35 million as compensation for the loss of a beloved one.
The judge in his ruling observed that the deceased's human and maternal rights, rights to basic medical care and the rights of her three children were violated. Last Friday, a cheque of Shs9.4 million was handed over to the husband of the deceased, Mr David Mugerwa, as a part payment of the Shs35 million court award.
The handover in Kampala was organised by Centre for Health, Human Rights & Development, a human rights organisation that provided legal service to the bereaved family.
In acceptance of the Shs9.4 million cheque, Mr Mugerwa said he was going to use the award money to cater for his children's needs and also pay their school fees. He also called upon Nakaseke Hospital and other government hospitals to care for patients to avoid a similar scenario that befell his beloved wife.
Court evidence showed that the deceased was admitted to Nakaseke Hospital for the second stage of labour.
The nurse on duty discovered that the deceased had developed obstructed labour which would lead to her death if not operated upon.
The nurse then called Dr Mubeezi to respond to Nanteza's emergency but her efforts yielded nothing as he was reportedly in Nakasongola District.
Background
This is the very matter that saw Justice Kabiito travel to Nakaseke Hospital to ascertain whether it was out of negligence that the expectant mother died unattended to by Dr Davis Mubeezi who was supposed to be on duty that fateful day. Medical statistics show that 17 pregnant women die on daily basis from preventable maternal deaths in Uganda.

That includes Sir Edward Mutesa, President Lule, President Binayisa, up to and into Ssabasajja Mutebi. Who all happen to be Baganda leaders."
