{UAH} "LITTLE RASCALS": Janet warns schools on producing brilliant rascals

First Lady Janet Museveni on Monday warned Ugandan education institutions to act now or risk churning out rascals and monsters.

Ms Museveni's remarks were contained in a speech read out by Allen Kagina, the executive director of Uganda National Roads Authority, at the opening of the East Africa Christian Education Summit at Uganda Christian University in Mukono.

She said if church institutions did not insist on spiritually-vibrant individuals, educated Ugandans would be a brilliant but flawed lot. To avoid this, education institutions should be the custodian of society's conscience and encourage character formation.

The 2015 summit was organised by the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) under the theme, "Christian Education in the Age of Bureaucracy". It discussed the role of Christian institutions in the education of young people and how to partner governments to offer quality education.

Janet further commended governments that have granted their citizens freedom of worship, forming religious associations, and assembly.

"There are many areas in the world now where believers are forbidden by law to assemble for worship and this is what we call the developed world," the First Lady noted.

During the three-day conference, the 502 Christian delegates from 17 countries also launched the (ACSI) Uganda Chapter. Dr Samson Makhado the director ACSI, Africa said one of the challenges facing the association is the misuse of technology in schools. He said many schools had indirectly permitted students to access modern technology, which was promoting immorality.

"Technology is not the problem but how we use it; if we teach our students to use technology in a way that develops Africa, then that is fine, [rather] than using it for immoral activities," Makhado said.

He urged African countries to abandon European curricula inherited at independence and develop new ones relevant to today's challenges.

"But this I know, UPC believed and still believes in
very high education. We can call Obote all bad names we have, but the bottom line remains that he got more scholarships for Buganda than all previous Uganda leaders combined. That includes Sir Edward Mutesa, President Lule, President Binayisa, up to and into Ssabasajja Mutebi. Who all happen to be Baganda leaders." Mulindwa
