Former Vice President Prof Gilbert Bukenya has slammed Hon Amama Mbabazi, saying the ex premier is good at "making promises but short on action."

Bukenya said during The Democratic Alliance deliberations, it was agreed that all members contribute funds to run the operations of the coalition arrangement but Mbabazi never raised a shilling for the Alliance's cause.

He said FDC contributed over Shs100m; DP brought on the table about Shs 20m in instalments while the ex VP's group, Pressure for National Unity (PNU) paid Shs 30m.

"We waited for Mbabazi's money in vain," said Bukenya.

"We are now wondering whether he has not been promising us hot air," he added.

Bukenya was addressing his supporters in Lwengo on Saturday.

"Mbabazi knows how to make colourful speeches but when it comes to time for action, you will not see him. We doubt his commitment to the struggle," he added.

According to reports, Mbabazi has promised to sponsor MPs on the 'Go Forward' ticket throughout the country.

Potential candidates say Mbabazi's camp promised them at least Shs 200m each for campaigns.

If true, Mbabazi's entire budget could be estimated at over $ 50m.

Mbabazi is yet to publicly reveal his campaign budget.

Support

Meanwhile, Bukenya explained that apart from his wife Jacqueline Mbabazi, daughters and in-law, Hope Mwesigye, Mbabazi is yet to bring on board a considerable number of supporters from NRM.

Bukenya also revealed that Mbabazi lacks structures at the grassroots level and that he is hoping to build his base from disgruntled NRM members who will lose in the next primaries.

"But it is not proper to wait for frustrated people. They may or may not be available," he argued as his supporters cheered him on.

In the failed TDA talks, it was reported that Bukenya had thrown his weight behind Mbabazi just like DP and UPC.

However, the unfolding development paints a picture of a man determined to secure the highest position in the land.

"NRM will not look on idly as Mbabazi moves to disorganise the party. They will fight back," he warned.

Bukenya told his supporters in Lwengo that after months of observation and studying Dr Kizza Besigye and Mbabazi, he had made up his mind to seek the presidency.

"While Besigye is a better candidate than Mbabazi and has strong support from the grassroots; he looks tired. His support has been dwindling over time," added Bukenya.

"Besigye needs to go beyond complaining that he is always a victim of rigging in presidential elections."

Besigye maintains the proposed electoral reforms which include disbanding the Electoral Commission are a prerequisite for conducting free and fair elections.

Bukenya promised to cause significant changes in the governance systems and mechanise agriculture sector to entrench democracy and create employment opportunities for the young people.
