MUMBAI: An Indian mechanical engineer living in Kampala, Uganda, was killed in an apparent hate crime by a local on Thursday night. He was returning home with his wife after Navratri celebrations.

Michael Fernandes (55) and his wife Clara, originally from Andheri, had been in the Ugandan capital for 10 years. On Thursday, after Michael returned from work, Clara insisted on attending Navratri celebrations organized by the Indian community there. After attending the function, the two, along with a Gujarati couple, were on their way home in the Kamwokya area around 11.30pm.

A group of Ugandan men started following the couples and began abusing them on Mawanda Road. The Indians ignored the remarks and continued walking. Soon, a member of the gang came from behind and hit Michael on the head with an iron rod. He collapsed on the floor. The men fled. Michael was taken to hospital in a motorcycle taxi, known locally as boda-boda. He was declared dead before admission.

Michael's sister-in-law Cynthia Vaz, a resident of Bhayander, received a call around 2.30am on Friday from Clara, informing that her husband had been killed minutes away from their house. "The local police has registered a case against six or seven men. The Indian couple accompanying Clara and Michael will be able to identify them," said Vaz. Clara told her sister on phone that the men did not rob them. She told Vaz that the Ugandans were abusing them for "taking away their jobs". The Indian community in Uganda rushed to help Clara. Vaz said the goons were trying to provoke the two couples.

The body has been taken for autopsy and the Indian high commission in Uganda is helping complete procedure to get the body, which will be brought to Bhayander. The couple was to travel on holiday to Australia next month. Vaz said Michael was fluent in the local language and had many friends.

"But this I know, UPC believed and still believes in
very high education. We can call Obote all bad names we have, but the bottom line remains that he got more scholarships for Buganda than all previous Uganda leaders combined. That includes Sir Edward Mutesa, President Lule, President Binayisa, up to and into Ssabasajja Mutebi. Who all happen to be Baganda leaders." Mulindwa
