Mukono.
Police on Monday evening arrested Mukono municipality member of parliament Betty Nambooze along four other executives of the Democratic Party (DP) for allegedly holding an unlawful assembly.
Ms Nambooze was arrested with Mukono Central Division party flag bearer George Kagimu, the district party spokesperson Peter Nsamba, Brian Sejjemba and one Tasira.
They were picked at around seven o'clock from Nassuuti Mwala pub as they addressed a group of residents, bundled on a police pick up and driven to Mukono police station where they were detained.
Mukono DPC Fred Ahimbisibwe confirmed their arrest and said they held a political meeting without seeking prior permission from police and a time beyond the stipulated hours.
Mr Ahimbsibwe, however, added that the MP and Mr Kagimu had since been released on police bond while investigations were continuing. By press time, the three others were still in police custody.
In an interview at her home at Nakabago in Ntaawo ward on Tuesday, Ms Nambooze said she was released after midnight and driven to her home in a police truck.
She however condemned police for applying what she called double standards in dealing with Ugandans, saying that while the ruling NRM party members are free to hold their rallies up to any time and without seeking police permission, this is not the case with members of the opposition.
By press time, the MP was heading top police to secure release of her other three colleagues.
At police, George Kagimu who is vying for the Mukono Central Division chairmanship said he would have no problem if the arrest was effected in a fair manner, adding that those still in confinement were harassed.
