Tanzania president-elect Magufuli kicks out minister, corrupt business tycoon from his house

DAR ES SALAAM

JUST days before his inauguration, Tanzania's president-elect, Dr. John Pombe Magufuli, has demonstrated that his government will have zero tolerance on corruption after kicking out from his house a cabinet minister who arrived with a corrupt business tycoon.

In an unexpected move, the Minister for Lands, William Lukuvi, showed up at Magufuli's house in Dar es Salaam with Tanzanian business tycoon Tanil Somaiya, for the purpose of introducing the unscrupulous businessman to the president-elect and make acquaintances for future dubious deals/contracts.

"Lukuvi is friends with both Magufuli and Somaiya. Therefore, he took his friend Somaiya to introduce him to the president-elect in an unexpected move," said one witness.

"Lukuvi told Magufuli that Tanil Somaiya is a great friend of the ruling CCM party and has contributed millions of dollars to CCM to finance its national party meeetings and campaigns."

"Lukuvi further told Magufuli that Tanil can help the new president elect with financial needs that he may have."

"Upon hearing those words, a vividly angry Magufuli told off Lukuvi. Without mincing words, Magufuli said it was an open secret that Tanil Somaya was among a group of corrupt businessmen who were financially backing former Prime Minister Edward Lowassa's presidential bid."

Lowassa was forced to resign as PM in 2008 after being directly implicated in the Richmond power generation contract corruption scandal.

"Magufuli got angry and told Lukuvi and Tanil Somaiya to leave his house at once."

Lukuvi is widely known to have a person friendship with Tanil, who has been linked to a long list of corruption scandals. They include the BAE military radar scandal, sale of substandard helicopters to the Tanzanian army which have already killed several people, sale of IVECO trucks and buses to Tanzanian army, TPDF, at inflated costs and the sale of a Gulfstream presidential jet to the Tanzanian government at an exhorbitant price tag.

Somaiya was also recently named as mastermind of a major scandal involving the theft of over 675 billion Tanzanian shillings using fake mobile phone recharge vouchers from Vodacom Tanzania.

The infamous Vodacom Jero Jero scandal led to the resignation of Vodacom Tanzania Managing Director Rebe Meza and also involved bilionaire Rostam Aziz, a close personal friend of Tanil Somaiya, and chief financier of Lowassa's failed presidential bid.

Several blogs have exposed these scandals against Tanil and Rostam, including:

It is an open secret that Rostam and Tanil bankrolled Lowassa's attempt to bribe his way to the presidency during the ruling CCM party presidential nomination process.

When CCM rejected Lowassa because of widespread corruption allegations against him, he joined opposition party CHADEMA and Rostam and Tanil continued financing him.
