The Christian community of St Kagwa Parish in Bushenyi yesterday collected money for FDC Presidential candidate Kizza Besigye when he showed up for Mass in the morning.
It all started after the Rev Fr Vincent Birungi, the Director St Agness Girls Secondary School, who was part of the priests that led the Mass, announced towards the end that he was gifting Dr Besigye Shs 10,000 like other Ugandans have been doing.
After giving him the money, other Christians shouted that they too wanted to give "etoffaali" (fundraise). Bushenyi- Ishaka Municipality Member of Parliament Odo Tayebwa then stepped forward and asked if indeed they want to donate money to Dr Besigye.
"Do you want to give Colonel etoffaali?" Mr Tayebwa asked and the congregation answered 'yes' in chorus.
Dr Besigye was then handed a basket and Christians filed to deliver their donations. One woman decorated him with a rosary as her donation.
Dr Besigye walked away with a total of Shs 687,000 in a short time.
Speaking to the congregation, Dr Besigye said God loves all people irrespective of their distinctions.
He called for respect and cooperation even among the political actors in the country.
Fr Eldeus Karenzi prayed for him. Dr Besigye then proceeded for service at All Saints Greater Church where the Archdeacon, the Rev Canon William Twinamatsiko, also prayed for him.
Dr Besigye asked church leaders to pray for the country so that the elections are peaceful.
He challenged Christians to love their neighbours as they love themselves.
"We are trying to create a just and fair society, not being equal before God only but also equal before others and the law; we should share the gifts of God equitably," said Dr Besigye.
Dr Besigye said there has to be justice in order to have peace.
"We must really strive for justice at all levels; politics, economy and social sphere. My message is that we work for peace, it is justice that will deliver peace which will buttress the love that we cherish," he said.
Dr Besigye yesterday campaigned in Sheema and Bushenyi districts where he addressed rallies in Kitagata, Bugongi, Kishaabya, Kabwohe, Rwentuuha and Kizinda.
