Huge support for Magufuli's Uhuru Day cleanliness drive - News
Dar es Salaam. President John Magufuli's directive on general cleanliness to mark Tanzania's Independence Day was yesterday greeted with overwhelming countrywide support. Tanzanians poured en masse into streets in support of the President's directive. The early morning hours were yesterday dominated with people carrying brooms and other gear for cleaning their surroundings.
In Arusha Region, general cleanliness dominated all the activities of the day.
With brooms and other tools in hand, people poured in streets en mass, cleaning garbage or picking all sorts of litter to heed the President's call. Much concentration was in the heart of the city which hosts the garbage and litter prone central market and main bus terminal.
In Dodoma, people complained of shortage of cleaning gear but they went on to collect garbage with bare hands.
A random survey by this paper yesterday in different streets found some residents in limbo particularly when they attempted to remove dirty water. "As you can see, this water is too dirty, and probably contains waterborne diseases, therefore, without having gum-boots and gloves, it is very risky to remove it," said Sifaeli Mpazi, a resident of Chang'ombe.
He added, "I recommend that next time it would be wise for the government in collaboration with NGOs to assure that each household is provided with cleaning gear. Otherwise, the exercise will never attain the targeted goals."
In Chunya, Mbeya, the District Commissioner, Mr Elias Tarimo, asked the residents to inculcate the habit of washing their hands before eating any food and after visiting toilet.
He said this after he led the masses in the general cleaning exercise to mark Uhuru Day, which lasted few hours.
In Morogoro, members of state security agencies dominated the exercise.
The security men and women all flocked the regional hospital where they later divided themselves into groups with one being at the regional presidential house. Members from the Police Force, the army and Prisons, participated in the exercise that started around six in the morning.
The regional police commander, Mr Leonard Paul, said cleanliness "is a tradition to security men." Other areas which were cleaned up include the district hospital at Sabasaba, the regional market and Mawenzi.
A huge number of Morogoro residents, including students and civil servants, turned out to participate in the campaign.
The leadership of Njombe Region has announced it would use every end of the month as a day for cleaning up the environment.
The Regional Administrative Secretary, Mr Jackson Saitabahu, made the remarks yesterday during the cleaning up campaign to mark 54 years of independence.
"This is a directive from all regional government officials in the region and I call upon all people to ensure they participate," he said. In Musoma, residents called on authorities to set by-laws that would guide people on how they should conduct cleanliness every month.
A health officer for Mukendo Ward, Mr Desderi Rwegoshora, was arrested after he was accused of failing to execute his duties. The officer reportedly failed to mobilise people to clean up Mukendo Market which falls under his docket.
In Handeni District, residents commended the environment cleaning campaign, saying it is an event that should be conducted frequently to combat disease outbreaks.
