The Chairman Makerere University Convocation, Dr. Tanga Odoi has vowed to mobilize masses against the conduct of Prof. Stella Nyanzi with the view of pushing for her suspension from the country's oldest high institution of learning.
The visibly angry and no-nonsense don told Journalists on Thursday at the University that the institution and the entire country has been put to shame by Prof. Nyanzi's actions where all former students and staff world over are looking at the next step that would be taken against her.
Nyanzi was early this week seen undressing in protest to defend her office space at Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR).
She alleged that she was under attack by the institute's head Prof. Mahmood Mamdani.
Tanga observed actions taken by Nyanzi were undeserving for such a professor and unbefitting of the country's cultural values and norms.
"In Buganda, Nyanzi would cease being a woman and in Japadhola where I come from, she would be pushed into a hut and would be set on fire," Tanga said.
Tanga said the University management must come out immediately to protect lectures who might suffer from a reply of Nyanzi's actions by students.
"Students won't only claim to be raped by lecturers but might go ahead to address once lectures set course work deadlines that don't favour them," Tanga warned.
"I am a member of council because I am the chairman of the convocation. We are allowed to participate in the day-today management of the university but where it is used for negative publicity; all of us who claim to be Makererians get affected."
He therefore warned that if the University management doesn't suspend Nyanzi from her office, he would mobilize all stakeholders and non- teaching staff to push both the management and Nyanzi out of the institution.
"We are not going to sit back, Stella Nyanzi must be made to leave that office, if she doesn't leave the office and remains protected by the Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Ddumba-Ssentamu, I shall organize convocation members to prepare a tsunami to kick out the VC out of office," warned the former leader of staff members.
"If the VC protects nudity or the management doesn't take a quick decision today and tomorrow, we shall take action and force both of them out of office."
He also appealed to Prof. Mamdani to meet with the commission of inquiry to give his side of the story despite the embarrassment he faced.
Mamdani maintains that Nyanzi has refused to teach at the University as required by the PhD programme guidelines but continues to use MISR premises for private consultancy work.
The reputed world-class scholar did not spare Prof Ddumba who he accuses of inciting a rebellion against him.
"It is lamentable that the University's leadership has busied itself with setting up a witch- hunting committee as MISR's PhD program is being dismantled before TV cameras and social media. If the program is to be killed, let it be killed in broad daylight. At least, then, the Ugandan people will know who to hold responsible for this tragic outcome," said the Harvard trained Professor.
"With all of the above in mind, the MISR Management will not cooperate with the current Investigation Committee instituted by the VC, who has a vested interest in the outcome of the investigation, and who, given his recent manoeuvres to circumvent specific MISR initiatives, cannot suddenly be seen to place MISR's and the University's interests above those of his kin, Dr. Nyanzi," he added.
After addressing the media, Tanga moved with other Convocation members straight to Nyanzi's office with the aim of requesting her to leave before being pushed out.
Punishment
Nyanzi was not in office but officials were later informed that she was in hiding.
Tanga later headed to the VC's office, Prof. Ddumba Ssentamu who promised that management would hold a meeting tomorrow to decide Nyanzi's fate.
"The meeting has been called tomorrow to deal with the question of the behaviour of Dr. Nyanzi and once it goes through, it's when the press shall be addressed on the matter," Tanga told ChimpReports.
Mamdani this week suggested that the prerequisite to addressing the present situation is three- fold: one, to set up a truly impartial consultative (rather than investigatory) process; two, to transfer Dr. Nyanzi from MISR, given her well-documented insistence that she will not teach in the PhD programme or participate in institutional research at MISR.
He said Makerere University should immediately send Dr. Nyanzi for a month long leave with the understanding that she will not return to the Institute for any reason as her presence threatens the future of the PhD programme aimed at elevating the university to international academic standards.
