Masindi. Shortage of food has hit some parts of Masindi District leaving many people hungry.

The most affected sub-counties include Bwijanga, Budongo and Karujubu Division in Masindi Municipality.
The Bwijanga LC3 chairperson, Mr Henry Muganyizi, said the most hit parishes in the sub-county are Ntooma and Bikonzi, where majority of the people used their land for sugarcane growing as opposed to food crops.
"People were expecting to survive on white ants and greens in the month of March but unfortunately, the drought has persisted," he said.

In Karujubu Division in Masindi Municipality, the area councillor, Mr Moses Kiirya, said many families are eating porridge because they cannot afford a balanced diet.
"I find a big problem because people are very poor yet they have to buy posho from Masindi Town," he said. Mr Kiirya blamed the famine in his area to poor land use.

The district vice chairperson, Mr Kanaginagi Ateenyi, attributed the shortage of food in the district to the poor season last year coupled by prolonged drought.
"If the drought continues to mid-April, we are heading for a disaster," Mr Kanaginagi said.
He advised the public to plant quick maturing crops such as beans to overcome the problem of famine.
The district chief administrative officer, Mr Mark Tivu, promised to verify the reports and forge a way forward.
"I am going to visit all affected sub-counties to verify the reports and if it's true, we shall write to the Office of the Prime Minister for assistance," he said.

Once food basket
Before sugarcane growing became popular in the district about a decade ago, the district was one of the food baskets for the country producing maize and millet which was supplied in various parts of the country and parts of DR Congo and Sudan.

"But this I know, UPC believed and still believes in
very high education. We can call Obote all bad names we have, but the bottom line remains that he got more scholarships for Buganda than all previous Uganda leaders combined. That includes Sir Edward Mutesa, President Lule, President Binayisa, up to and into Ssabasajja Mutebi. Who all happen to be Baganda leaders." Mulindwa
