Uganda: Don't Reveal Government Secrets, Youth Leaders Warned

Bushenyi — The Bushenyi District principal human resource officer has advised youth leaders in the district against revealing government secrets during their tenure in office, saying it has dire consequences.

While presiding over the district youth council executive members' swearing in ceremony this week, Ms Pauline Nakayenga, told the leaders that information for public consumption is released only by mandated offices.

She said revealing the information by anyone else can cause confusion.

"Commit yourselves to public service and be faithful to the offices you are taking. Keep government secrets, don't become news reporters. Government and public information is released by the district spokesperson who is, in this case, the CAO [chief administrative officer] or district chairperson," said Ms Nakayenga.

Voluntary service

She also told the leaders that they were doing voluntary work and should not expect much from their offices. Ms Nakayenga advised them to abide by the law and be prepared to go through hard times since they will be serving people from all walks of life. The district gender officer, Ms Faith Betega, urged the leaders to fulfil what took them into office and avoid politicking.

"Time for politicking is over. Go and work, serve the public, represent people's interests in the forthcoming term of office," she said.

The seven-man district youth council is headed by Ms Gillian Natukwatsa as the chairperson and Mr Anthony Nuwahereza as the vice.
