A man who kept his Pakistani wife in slave conditions and told her that if she left his family home she would be raped, is facing prison.
Cruel Safraz Ahmed made Sumara Iram carry out endless chores at his London home, often submitting her to brutal attacks and the humiliation of washing in the garden.
He was charged with conspiracy to hold a person in domestic servitude and will face sentencing at Woolwich Crown Court later this month.
Cruel: Safraz Ahmed made Pakistani wife Sumara Iram carry out endless chores at his London home
Ahmed originally denied the allegations but later changed his plea, becoming the first British conviction for such a case involving a man and wife, reports the Sunday Times.
The 34-year-old mechanic had an arranged marriage with Iram in the city of Gurjat, in the Punjab, in 2006, but she did not come over to the UK until 2012.
She moved in with Ahmed and his mother in Charlton, south east London, where she was subjected to abhorrent treatment that would later lead her to attempt suicide.
Iram first became suspicious of their relationship, when Ahmed refused to consummate their union.
