Uganda: Police Start Mamdani - Nyanzi Probe
By Joseph Kato
Kampala — Police have launched investigations into claims by Dr Stella Nyanzi, of "irregularities" at the Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR).
Among other claims, Dr Nyanzi alleges that Prof Mahmood Mamdani, the MISR executive director, does not run the institute professionally.
As part of their investigations, the police want to interrogate Prof Mahmood Mamdani.
Police spokesperson Fred Enanga, however, claimed the scholar has been postponing scheduled meetings. "We have on several occasions scheduled meetings with Prof Mamdani but he keeps postponing them. He sometimes refers us to his boss Prof Edward Kirumira, who is also 'playing the same tactics'," Mr Enanga said while addressing the media at a weekly national security press briefing at the police headquarters in Naguru yesterday.
Mr Enanga said police have decided to speak to Prof Mamdani because Dr Nyanzi, while undressing last week, claimed there were many irregularities in the management of MISR. He added that the police had finished getting statements from some students and other staff members to aid their investigations, before adding that they would try again to organise a meeting with Prof Mamdani and Prof Kirumira.
