{UAH} Urban Theory - Critical Realism
There are four developments taking place in our urbanised world namely;
a. Greening the Urban Space a derivative of serious environmental issues
b. Technological evolution from on-grid to off-grid technology, solar/wind etc'
c. Confrontational Politics giving birth to radicalism thus change in ideology
d. Need for structural change in macroeconomics hence birth of a circular economy
The arrays above are radical and pragmatic in that they are changing the world as we know it in many fundamental ways. Deeper a non causal layer, Urban Architecture, Engineering, Infrastructure Design and Management will have to change. For instance, if one has solar cells can produce electricity s/he can consume and also be a service provider by selling the surplus.
Generally, engineering and road design science has completely failed to solve traffic jams one of the constraint on urban economy and mobility. The solutions suggested are not only interesting but very realistic.
Probably Africa is the only continent that has not really seen all four arrays firmly established. But population are rapidly growing and there is urban expansion without industrialisation. There is an influx of the youth to urban centres in search for better opportunities.
The question remains how will cities on his continent look like – I am organising a second urban and infrastructure Development Conference to influence economic, social and political direction.
It is kind of unlocking the social cube on a mega-scale in pursuit of the Pulse of Freedom!
