{UAH} Stories from Mary, my Shilluk friend: Did you know that Elephants are scared of Chickens?
Once upon a time there was a eatig competition between a Rooster and a bull Elephant.
The competition was not about who ate the most but who ate longest in one day.
The Elephant was shown a fresh green pasture and the Rooster a field of grains.
And so the went on foraging and pecking grass and grains respectively.
By sunset the Elephant passed out wile the Rooster kept on pecking to nightfall.
When he woke uo the following day Elephant was shocked that the little feather-ed creature had won the competition and soon after went to attack the Rooster for pecking and covering grains at the same time without swallowing them.
Since them they have been enemies and each time they meet its the Chickens that win the fight.
THERE IS A LESSON IN THIS STORY.
The Shilluk and Nuer of South Sudan, matter of fact, use chicken to chase away huge herds of Elephants attempting to destroy their crops, said Mary to my astonishment.
Each time an Elephant or Elephants are spotted the the first and only defence is not the spear or AK 47 but Chickens.
Men and children hurriedly run to grab chickens by the legs and sway them in the air and this is said to frighten the big Elephants into hasty retreats and an herd confronted with angry crackling Chickens will never return to areas they were confronted by or with Chickens.
While Ugandans run and let Elephants destroy their crops, the Shilluk and Nuer deploy their domesticated feathery friends to have Elephants make a dusty run for dear lives.
