{UAH} Col. Opito, Wife’s Passports Confiscated before Release

The passports of Entebbe Garrison Commander, Col. Dan Opito Odwee and his wife were withdrawn by the army before the senior officer was released from the military detention on Tuesday.

ChimpReports has learned that Ketty Opito the wife of the embattled army boss was ordered by officers at Makindye military barracks to go home and collect the passports.

Clan leaders and family members had camped at Makindye to see Opito who was detained for 25 days without appearing before any court.

Family members had restricted access to the colonelwho was allegedly arrested for involved in a high level plot to topple President Yoweri Museven's government.

According to a family source, the wife of Opito was surprised when asked to produce the two passports since no one had any hope that he was going to be released.

"We knew nothing. Ketty was so surprised when asked to bring passports," a family member told this website. ChimpReports on Wednesday morning reported that Opito was released without charge since the army failed to find concrete evidence linking him to subversion.

Ordinarily if charged and released on bail, his sureties would have been the ones asked to deposit their passports.

But owing to the unconventional manner of his detention, the army chose to take the precautionary measure to limit his chances of escaping the country, before they quietly released him.

"No lawyer or judge was involved. The army did everything by themselves," another source added.

Col. Opito was arrested on 11th June from his office in Entebbe few days after the arrest of over two dozen army officers from Bombo headquarters, Makindye and the Defense headquarters in Mbuya.

Four civilians including MP Michael Kabaziguruka were arrested over the same allegations. In a meeting with opposition members under the auspice of Inter-Party Organization for Dialogue recently at State House Entebbe, Museveni said Kabaziguruka and others were up to something "very dangerous".
