{UAH} The Dubious Mask of the Labour Party
For over a decade Muslims have engaged in party politics based upon various principles such as "lesser of the two evils", "tactical voting" and "exercising our democratic right".
Labour has been presented as the safety valve for Muslims against hard-right nationalism. The idea that they represent the "working class" and "less privileged" and their supposed "pro-multicultural" positions.
What we are witnessing now with the Labour Party crisis will once again lead to the mobilisation of Muslims to defend Jeremy Corbyn.Corbyn was originally anti-eu but changed his position purely because of internal politics.
The reality is that the Labour Party is indifferent to the Conservatives in their ideological beliefs of secular liberalism. It's positions on the concept of political Islam as an extreme interpretation of Islam is the same. It's position that Muslims should accept the right of sexual freedom, freedom of speech and the freedom of belief is the same. It's recognition of the Zionist State is the same. All that is different is the style of reformation, not the dogmatic belief that secular liberalism should trump religious ideology.
Moreover, ever since Tony Blair the Labour Party has accepted the new status quo of global capitalism and neo-liberal foreign policy. The current split between the Labour Party is between centre-right Blairites and the left. Even Jeremy Corbyn had had to change his positions such as on the EU to placate internal dissent.
He has been facing an internal mutiny since Day 1 of his job and is on the verge of being ousted. What this demonstrates is that there is no space for the left in British politics anymore. Voting for Labour therefore has lost its raisin d'etre from the original reasons, albeit incorrect, of why Muslims supported it.
To continue supporting the Labour Party or to expend efforts to revive it shows just how much Muslims have lost their political direction and priorities.
Indeed it would not be an understatement to suggest that many Muslims struggle with engaging in the correct type of political engagement.
Their political engagement is within a narrow framework of liberal ideals and thoughts which are subject to exploitation by Politicians who are interested in their own vested interests.
Muslims have a unique way of life which encompasses all aspects of life- including their political life.
Sooner they realise this- sooner they can define their priorities which are based on the Islamic creed, not on a creed which is alien to what was revealed to the Best of Creation- the Prophet (saw).
