Your girl Kendra Harrison set a sensational new world record here in London yesterday, smashing a 28 year record, yet she is not going to the Rio Olympics. She is apparently a victim of your infamous "Trials" which operates a "Winner Takes All" selection policy rather than objective assessment of an athlete's capability and medal potential. Ms Harrison has recorded the fastest time this year and it was only a matter of time before she would break the world record, yet she froze at your Trials, coming only 6th. The UK Athletics does not run a "Trials", Instead athletes are given several "Qualifying MeetINGSs" to hit the qualifying time or standard, and only the best athlete is automatically chosen. The remaining two or three are "selected" by the Selectors, and they take into account, not just the time the athlete has recorded but also factors such as his history, pedigree, injury, reliability, age etc. For eg, UK Athletics has selected two old-timers Catherine Uhurougu over athletes who have recorded faster times because, as a defending champion, she has always delivered in all the major tournaments, including winning the Olympic gold over competitors with much faster times- she is seen as a person of "steel" who will rise to the occasion, whereas her competitors may not have her mental resolve. The other is Jo Pavey, who has been chosen for sentimental reasons and also as a shining example to the young as she will be competing in her 5th consecutive Olympics, and at 43 years of age, will be the oldest track and field athlete, and mother of two, in the competition.
