{UAH} SATURDAY JULY 27TH 1985 UNLA COUP BY THE OKELLOS AGANST OBOTE
The second school term had closed on Friday July 26th 1985 in
preparation for registration of voters for general elections scheduled
in December. l was an O-level student at St. Victor's SSS Kitaasa in
now Bukomansimbi District. It was day school and as we were walking
with my colleagues (Dativa Nantale now a powerful auditor in Kampala,
Mary Namatovu, a secondary school Head Teacher at Mapeera Memorial
School in now Kalungu District, and the late Mathias Miiro), a
military track full of soldiers from Mubende to Masaka, by passed us,
and they waved a fist, which is a DP symbol. We thought that they
either wanted to trap us and we answer in the same and they shoot us
as it had happened at Nateete in 1980, or they were doing the other
one to woo girls. We ignored them.
l was living at my grand father's home at Mbaale-Kitaasa in
Bukomansimbi and on the following day, l went with him to our main
home at Nnambiriizi- Ssembabule, and the good news we found on Radio
Uganda, "... we want a united Uganda. Uganda is not for a particular
tribe or individual...We call upon Hon. Yoweri Museveni and senior
members of UNLA to report at Senior Police Officers Mess Nakasero.."
it was by Eric Odwar Parmoi. My aunt, delivered a baby, l named Zainab
Namirembe, due to the peace that we were envisaging after the division
of the regime that had failed to protect people and property. Ever
since, l started listening to foreign radios like BBC, VOA, Radio
Cologne, South Africa and the then Voice of Kenya, Nairobi as Radio
Uganda news were censored.
