Fred Sekibengo, the driver of the truck that killed Doreen Tashobya, the Entebbe Municipality MP Rose Tumusiime's daughter and a one Patrick Busingye a care taker has been sentenced to two years in prison.
The truck he was driving rammed into and killed Busingye, a motorcyclist and Tashobya who were riding a bodaboda motorcycle at Muzinga Park near Entebbe State House on June 21, 2016.
Sekibengo was charged with one count of reckless driving contrary to Section 119 of the Traffic and Road Safety Act; and two counts of causing death contrary to Section 108 of the Traffic and Road Safety Act.
Sekibengo, 30, appeared before the Entebbe Chief Magistrate, Mary Kaitesi Lukwago Kisakye on Friday July 1, 2016 and pleaded guilty to all the three traffic offences.
The Court convicted him and sentenced him to a fine of Shs300,000 or six month imprisonment on the offense of careless driving; another fine of Shs1.8 million or two years imprisonment for the second count of causing death; and a third fine of Shs1.8 million or two years imprisonment for the third count of causing death.
Total fine that the court ordered Mr Sekibengo to pay to the Government of Uganda is Shs3.9 million.
The Court further ordered that the imprisonment sentences are to run concurrently. This means, Mr Sekibengo can be imprisoned up to only two years.
The accused person was surprisingly grateful to the court after the pronouncements. He knelt and thanked the court for "being lenient to him", saying he had been threatened at the Police that he would be jailed for life.
The victims' relatives and friends in the court were unhappy with the sentence and hurled insults at the presiding magistrate.
