{UAH} Dr fired for speaking to the media of shortage of drugs in hospital

Managers of Iganga Medical Hospital in Iganga district in Eastern Uganda have fired one of the health facility's doctors for allegedly speaking to the media about shortage of drugs at the facility.

Emma Magumba, a clinical psychologist at the hospital's mentally ill patients' clinic says he was summarily fired and asked to stay away from the hospital premises until further notice.

"I thought by talking about the problem to the media, I would be of help to the common man but the hospital administrators have fired me saying they don't want to see me at the hospital until further notice," the visibly depressed Magumba who has served at the hospital for the last five years told NTV.

Magumba on Monday told the media of how they had been supplied with only three types of drugs instead of the 13 types which they had been receiving.

The hospital had also put up a notice asking patients to seek medical attention else where because the hospital didn't have enough drugs.

Ekwaro A. Ebuku head of the Uganda national medical association condemned the hospital's actions saying they would investigate Magumba's claim and see how he gets justice.

"Firing him is not the solution to the problem. Shortage of drugs in  government hospitals is common knowledge," he said.
