BUDUDA: Police in Bududa District are investigating circumstances under which a 44-year-old man stormed Bududa hospital and killed his wife at the hospital ward Tuesday.
The couple is said to have been married for some time before they separated following martial conflicts. They had two children. The deceased had reportedly accused her husband of marrying a second wife.
Daily Monitor learnt that after seperating, the deceased went back to school.
The Bududa District police commander (DPC), Mr Godwin Ochaki, confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Catherine Naeme, 22, a Senior Four student at Masaba High School - Nauyo.
He said the deceased had gone to the hospital to check on her brother's son who was admitted at the children's ward.
"The assailant followed her up to the hospital and stabbed her thrice," said Mr Ochaki, adding that the deceased died on the spot.
Police preliminary investigations indicate that the man had been threatening to kill his former wife because she refused to go back to his home and yet he paid bride price.
The DPC said the suspect (name withheld for fear of jeopardizing investigations) went into hiding immediately after committing the crime.
"We are following useful leads and soon, he will be in custody to answer to murder charge," he said.
He attributed the increasing cases of domestic violence, murder and assault in the area on excessive drinking and drug abuse.
Ms Bennah Namono, the LC5 councillor for Bushribo Sub-county, decried the increasing gender-based violence in the district.
"Why are men killing us with our children? Are we the problem or they are the problem?" said Ms Namono.
In July, a 29-year-old father hacked his two-year-old son after discovering that his wife had divorced.
