Your man Duterte is fast becoming a lumbering jackass and serious embarrasment to the Philippines. I warned you about this guy, from the time I had a confrontation with him way back in 1989 when his armed goons, vigilante death squads, murdered 12 prisoners in cold blood right infront of our eyes. I stood up to the man in a sensational confrontation, when no one else would do so. He threatened to shoot me, after I accused him of not being fit to hold any public office, let alone that of mayor of Davao City. He is now taking the Philippines down a very dangerous road, especially with his policy of extra-judicial executions. Last week, Islamic terrorists belonging to the Abu Sayyaf (BEARERS OF THE SWORD) group detonated a bomb in a market in Davao City, killing 15 and maiming hundreds. Duterte's knee jerk reaction was to declare "Martial l Law". This sent shock waves through-out the country, because all Filipinos have very bad memories of Martial law under the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos. Between 1971-1986, the Philippines was ruled under martial law, in a period widely regarded as the darkest in the country's history. The People Power Revolution of 1986 that overthrew Marcos and restored popular, albeit flawed, democracy, was supposed to bring to a permanent end any rule by decree, where civl and political rights are suspended. and unlimited power given to the security forces. Duterte's declaration sent a shiver down the spines of nearly everybody in the civil rights movement, and he was forced to rescind it, and to declare instead a "STATE OF LAWLESSNESS", which is totally diffrerent from Martial Law because it does not suspend civil liberties, but merely allows the army to cooperate with the police and to assume some police powers in order to restore law and order.
Following this imbecilic and tastless outburst aganist President Obama, I am told MPs want to start Impeachment Proceedings against him.The Philippines is a semi-colony of the USA and no Filipino president can be so insulting to a sitting American president. Duterte is only 6 months in office, and I wonder how long he will last. He may follow in the footsteps of a previous Filipino president, the film star Joseph Estrada, who was also impeached after only 2 years in office- although his for for corruption.
