Byanyima Speaks Out On Social Worker Allegedly Killed By Her Nephew

The executive director of Oxfam, Ms Winnie Byanyima has sent a condolence message to the family of Kenneth Watmond Akena, a community development officer, who was last Saturday evening shot at Game Store parking lot and died moments after he was admitted to hospital in Kampala.

According to police, Akena was shot after he reportedly knocked the car of businessman Mathew Kanyamunyu.

Police said they had arrested Kanyamunyu, the chief executive officer of Quantum Express Logistics, and his Burundian girlfriend, Ms Cynthia Munwangari, to help with the investigations after Akena accused them of being the people who shot him in the stomach.

Byanyima who is also wife to former presidential candidate, Dr Kizza Besigye, on Monday morning posted on her twitter handle, @Winnie_Byanyima saying: "My heart and prayers are with Akena's family. Let justice be done. Matthew is my nephew. A tragedy for us too."

Akena, a child protection specialist based in Kasese District, was shot in the stomach at around 8pm on Saturday and later succumbed to the bullet wounds at Novik hospital.

Police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi on Sunday told Daily Monitor that: "Before he died, Akena said the two people (Kanyamunyu and Munwangari) who had rushed him to the hospital are the ones who shot him for scratching their car," he said.

" The deceased said he was reversing in the parking lot when he knocked their car. And that he was shot in the stomach when he got out of his car to apologise," Mr Kaweesi added
