CAIRO (Reuters) – The Abu Sayyaf posted a video on Monday showing the beheading of a man identified as a German hostage captured last November.
The video reposted by the militancy-monitoring group SITE showed a machete-wielding militant kill the elderly German hostage. SITE identified the man as Jurgen Kantner.
The German was killed after talks for his release in exchange for a P30-million ransom collapsed.
The video showed Kantner, 70, a sailing enthusiast, his hands tied behind his back, being beheaded at a jungle clearing. He could be heard on video saying: "Now he'll kill me", before a man began cutting his head off with a large knife.
Abu Sayyaf is believed to be holding a number of hostages and has freed several in return for ransom payments. Kantner's deadline for ransom had expired on Sunday, according to SITE.
Below is the statement of Peace Adviser Jesus Dureza on the beheading of the German hostage:
We grieve as we strongly condemn the barbaric beheading of yet another kidnap victim , German Juergen Gustav Kantner in Sulu.
Up to the last moment, many sectors , including the Armed Forces of the Philippines exhausted all efforts to save his life. We all tried our best. But to no avail.
Terrorism has no place in a country like ours and we as a people must confront violent extremism every time it rears its ugly head.
Another precious life had been needlessly lost. There must be a stop to this killing of the innocent and the helpless
I was always in close contact with German authorities in our efforts.
We condole with his family, friends and loved ones.
