{UAH} KASESE, A CURSED DISTRICT?

KASESE, A CURSED DISTRICT?

It's unfortunate that Kasese- one of the districts with the greatest potential for industrial, tourism, and extensive agricultural growth is one of the most prone to conflict, abject poverty and a general lack of basic amenities for the common man.
With its enviable flora and fauna; the great Queen Elizabeth and Mountain Rwenzori national parks, it's almost incomparable physical features and drainage features; the great East African rift valley's western wing, the snow capped Mountain Rwenzori, Lakes Edward and George, the best drainage system in the country making it very viable for extensive irrigation farming-Kasese is crossed vertically from mountain to sea by five major rivers;Rwimi, Mubuku,Nyamwamba, Nyamughasana and Lhubiriha and several other tributary and distributary rivers-, the volcanic craters, Kasese is arguably one of the most, if not the most naturally endowed district in the Uganda.
With its diverse mineral resource including oil in the Kikorongo basin, several HEP generating sources and the prospected international airport at Nyakasanga, Kasese has the potential of becoming the industrial and agricultural production powerhouse of Uganda -a New York.

It's saddening that, despite all its potential, Kasese has got its populace still holed up in abject poverty, its youth in total unemployment despite having attained formal and technical(hands on) education. It's saddening that most of the families in rural areas -which constitute the majority of Kasese's population -still lives under the poverty line.

Is it the historical nature of Kasese? Is it the sheer will of the people to be in this situation? Is it sheer government incompetence or utter negligence in investing in the district? Many schools of thought have been advanced by elites far and wide to that end, but it's safe to say that industrial and agricultural growth are mainly driven by government deliberate efforts to boost and direct the sectors. It remains to be seen the effort government has taken to utilize and exploit the vast endowment of Kasese to uplift its people and the nation at large. As it is, government has only done baby steps-

KASESE cobalt company is now out of service, Kilembe mines and Katwe salt are long defunct, Hima cement employs but a few people even though it's the only functional establishment around. Generally, KASESE is a sleeping giant that is deliberately being kept in slumber by the powers that be.
