A peaceful protest against xenophobia in Johannesburg has been reduced to chaos. Authorities have broken up the march, declaring it illegal. Organisers say they were only trying to highlight the plight of migrants in South Africa.
PRETORIA - There were scenes of anger and clashes on Friday when hundreds of people made their way through the Pretoria city centre, protesting against illegal immigrants.
The march comes amid attacks on foreign nationals in Pretoria West and other townships in the capital.
Residents attribute social ills and high unemployment rates to illegal immigrants.
Government says it is working to ensure a peaceful march.
