ABUJA - Nigeria's foreign minister on Wednesday condemned recent attacks on Nigerians in South Africa's capital city, Pretoria.

Homes and shops of Nigerians have been targeted and looted in Pretoria West in recent days.

Buildings with Nigerian businesses have been burned in Johannesburg's Rosettenville suburbs in the past few weeks.

Nigerian Foreign Minister Geoffrey Onyeama said his ministry had summoned the South African ambassador to discuss the matter.

The incident is the latest development in the rivalry between the countries with Africa's two largest economies.

Relations have been strained by accusations of South African xenophobia, with Nigerians alleging that Pretoria subjects them to harsh visa restrictions.

In the streets of Abuja, Nigerians expressed their anger over the attacks.

"They have their citizens here, right? They are not attacking them, nothing is happening to them, why are they attacking us over there? Why are they attacking us over there? Then come to the part of our government I think before this very time government ought to have taken a stand over that thing. They ought to have intervened, it shouldn't have come this far," said Abuja resident, Oladapo John.

At least 20 shops possibly belonging to immigrants were looted in South Africa's capital on Tuesday (February 21), but police could not confirm if the attacks had deliberately targeted foreigners.

South Africa, with a population of about 50 million, is home to an estimated 5 million immigrants.

Some politicians and residents say some of the immigrants are in the country illegally and accuse them of committing crimes and taking over local shops and jobs.

In April 2015, Nigeria recalled its top diplomat in South Africa to discuss anti-immigrant attacks that killed at least seven people and sent hundreds of foreigners fleeing to safety camps, as authorities sent in soldiers to quell unrest in Johannesburg and Durban.

In 2008, at least 67 people were killed in anti-immigrant violence, with thousands of people fleeing to refugee camps.

Human migration is as old as the earth itself....any efforts to force it to a halt will be as good as efforts to control prices in a market economy.SA like the world power USA are great products of migration yet now that history and heritage is denied by the offsprings of migrants. To see how serious a violation it is to human rights in form of restricted movement...scores of migrants are perishing in oceans..rivers ....and in communities continously because they deem it their correct to choose their destiny.Borrowing from the Legendary Nelson Mandela....."If a man is denied the right to live the life he believes in, he has no choice but to become an outlaw"....illegal migrant........its time we push for intergration and free movement...Are we free or we dom...Freedom.....Aluta Continua Maibuye iAfrica.Together we do great.

SA has a very high number of illegal immigrants which is not right. Not all foreigners are criminals or drug lords. Some are here legally doing legit businesses which is good for the country, but than again there are those illegal immigrants who jump the boarders and come this side to ruin peoples lives like stealing, killing and raping. Those are the kinds of the things we wont tolerate. SA has its own problems to sort out like any other country, this might hurt but its a fact. All foreigners are cowards how do you expect to have a successful country if you keep running away from it, every one is Africa wana see him/herself in South Africa, why dont you stay in your own countries and fix it, why run away since you guys think you are clever than south africans because you keep saying to us we are idiots and lazy, why not be clever enough to fix your own messy countries. We might have a corrupt government but what about your government? they are worse than any government in the world because they end up starting wars out of nothing and you all end up getting affecting and start immigrating to other countries, than you tell me who's the worse government. You come to SA because you have nowhere else to go but when you get here you act like you know better than us. i don't care what you guys think but SA have a big problem with illegal immigrants and its a known fact and if we dont do anything about it we gonna be over populated by foreigners in our own country. Govn is not doing anything about it because his benefiting from the foreign nations. Another fact is that nigerians are well known for fraud, drugs and prostituting young girls. 3 nigerians were arrest in america a month ago for drug dealings. So please dont try to defend Nigerians. My point is that all illegal immigrants and those dealing with drugs should be dealth with or else we will the law into our own hands than people will say its xenophobia. Another fun thing is that these guys were warned to leave but they said no we wont leave we will stay and fight. What are they scared for in their countries, Boko Haram or what i dnt really understand.

It is high time that all Africans must join hands in this whether foriegn or S. A. nationals, the department of home affairs, police and justice departments and the department of labour must do their jobs, to fight crime, drugs, prostitution, illegal entries to S.A as well as explotation. Especially explotation cause is what leads to the on going high rate of employment in S.A, as most companies do want employ S.A citizens, because they dont want pay people, basic employment conditions must apply to all of us and our fellow foreign nationals, please stop being cheap labourers, the department of labour should send out inspectors to investigate such fly-by-night companies, this days they are too relaxed. Police officers and other officialls should stop taking bribes from culprits(drug lords and criminals) and do what is required from them. Fellow Africans, Africa is for all Africans, arguing and fighting won't help us in anything so lets join hands and fight all this crimes, corruption, drugs, explotation, the list is endless, Africa is a reach continent and we are only making it poor ourselves STOP XENOPHOBIA, Xenophobia is a desease, God bless Africa

As South Africans we must learn to look at the bigger picture and stop narrowly looking locally. We belong to a community called the ''International community'' meaning we are not an island on our own, South Africa survives as a result of foreign investments, therefore any negative instability, foreign invested just redirect their resources else where, than jobs are lost and our bread winners become jobless. I don't think as South Africans we are lazy at all, I think the issue is limited skills.

Fellow human beings, fellow Africans and Fellow South Africans, at all cost we should remain focus and tackle the issues at hand.

What is currently happening in our country is what is termed ''ticking time bomb''. There's no country on earth without foreign nationals, the issue is states must have stringent rules in place within the framework of the law '' I come to your house I must obey your house rules'' no house rules I will definately do as I please. We must stand up and contribute positively and let's hold the security cluster of the country to account and where there is a flow let's fix it. This annual attack on foreign nationals will just hamper our economic growth. Yes we must all stand together and say No to drugs and No to prostitution, but in a civil maner.
