{UAH} MUSLIM MARTYRS (SHUHADA’U) IN UGANDA. No public holiday for them???
MASJID NOOR SHUHADA'U "Muslim Martyrs" Mosque at Namugongo was built in 1968 in commemoration of the Muslim Martyrs in Uganda, where over 100 Muslims were brutally tortured, killed and burnt on the orders of Kabaka Muteesa 1 for rejecting the Chief executioner's persuasion to denounce Islam. This execution took place between 1874-1876 during the reign of Muteesa 1. There was great continuous persecution of other faithful between 1885-1886. The last execution at this site on the orders of kabaka Mwanga II was on 3rd June 1886.
The government of Uganda set 3rd June, and declared it a National Public Holiday dedicated to the Uganda Martyrs(x-tians but not muslims). These executions were carried out at the official site Namugongo. It is reported that originally this site was instituted by Kabaka Kyabaggu who reigned in Buganda around 1760. The name "NAMUGONGO" people say it was coined from the word "Omugongo" a Luganda word for the "back" to refer to the kind of torture victims were subjected to, involving pulling victims on their backs. The site is located about 15km East of Kampala along Kampala – jinja road, about 5km from Kireka Trading centre along Kyaliwajjala – namugongo Road.
Islam was the first religion to reach Uganda as early as 1844 during the reign of Kabaka (king) Ssuuna II. While other scholars say it was as early as 1832 when Kabaka Ssuna received the first muslim traders led by Sheikh Ahmed Bin Ibrahim together with Snay Bin Amir.
It should be noted that Islam did not come to Uganda as a mission. It kept on spreading throughout different parts of the country by Muslim converts many of whom knew little about it. While others joined through trade relationships. Since Islam started in Uganda, there was no single national registered Muslim institution managing Muslim affairs in the country. However , Uganda Muslim Community leadership then , headed by Prince Alhajj Badru Kakungulu and National Advancement of African Muslims (NAAM) leadership then, headed by Sheikh Abdu Obed Kamulegeya, African Muslim Community Juma Sect , Bukoto Natete leadership headed by Sheikh Zaidi Mugenyasoka, Juma -Zukhuli sect Kyadondo leadership led by Sheikh Abdu-rahman Mivule supported a national effort in establishing a unifying national body to bring together the Muslims of Uganda, In 1972 the late president of Uganda Idd Amin Dada convened a conference of Muslim leaders in Kabale in Western Uganda, attended by Muslim representatives from all districts of the country to bring about the desired unity. On 1st June 1972 Uganda Muslim Supreme Council was established, its head quarters are based at Old Kampala hill. Every year 1st June is celebrated by the Muslims of Uganda in all the UMSC Structures.
It was not until 2012 when Uganda was celebrating 50 years of independence, that the Government of Uganda decided to join the three religious institutions (Muslims, Catholic and Protestants) while they were organizing the annual religious event of remembering their martyrs. Shuhada'u (Muslim martyrs at Namugongo) in Uganda. The years 1874 -1876 are important in the Islamic history of Uganda, they mark the history of the death of Uganda Martyrs at Namugongo. There was great persecution of Muslims in big numbers at places like Natete, Busega, Munyonyo, Lunguja, Nansana, and Namugongo the then official execution centre according to the orders of Kabaka Muteesa 1.
As stated by His Eminence the Mufti of Uganda in his message, several scholars and historians have written, taught and lectured about Muslim Martyrs in Uganda but have not been given the great attention. It is therefore necessary that further research be carried out to document this historical fact.
In 2013, the government of Uganda through its arm- Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) launched the Uganda Martyrs trail in its bid to promote Faith – Based Tourism at Namugongo. Uganda Tourism Board would also like to further explore modalities of developing martyrs trail in Uganda and beyond to international Tourism standards. A guide to important historical sites, where some of the Ugandan martyrs were murdered. This will promote the event as one of Uganda's key "Tourism Calendar'' events annually.
On December 10th 2013, the permanent secretary Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities officially wrote to the three religious Institutions (Catholic Church, the Church of Uganda and the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council) requesting them to present a Master Plan for redeveloping the Namugongo Martyrs Shrine.
On 4th January 2014 with the great Support of Owek. Al Hajj Amb. Prof Badru D. Kateregga, a Master Plan for the Muslim Martyrs Mosque at Namugongo was presented to the Ministry of Tourism. In the same way, His Eminence the Mufti of Uganda appointed a Committee to Coordinate the Shuhada-u( Muslim Martyrs) at Namugongo and Hajj Musana Sulayiman was appointed to Coordinate this Matter.
On the 12th January 2014 the UMSC lead Coordinator Hajji Musana was appointed to core Committee of Uganda Tourism Board which is the Official National Tourism Marketing and Promotions Government agency.
Given this back ground, it is our humble attempt to remind ourselves about the forgotten Muslim Martyrs in Uganda and it's our Prayer that it will serve as a modest step Insha Allah. There will be many more attempts to come by others in addition to ours. In the meantime, however, it is hoped that this brief Presentation will serve as a Foundation upon which data Collections format and Content may be built. It is an encouragement and appeal to the Ulamma (Scholars) and those brothers and Sisters versed with this Historical background to join us in this noble cause.
