{UAH} Rwanda bans mobile phones use by health practitioners at work as Uganda’s health services rot

Rwandan health practitioners unilaterally agreed to stop using a mobile phones within health facilities. This consensus agreement was reached at in a self-evaluation health retreat attended by hospital administrators, District local leaders, and Health officials from the Ministry of Health.

This decision effective March 1st was communicated by Malick Kayumba, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Health who emphasized that the decision is not superimposed but a consensus reached among health practitioners for the good of the country after self-evaluation.

Personal social matters were affecting health service delivery according Kayumba, who also heads the health communication division at Rwanda Biomedical Centre. Reports presented to the workshop had indicated that hospitals, which had earlier banned use of personal phones had turned out more productive," which health practitioners chose to emulate.

Dr Diane Gashumba the minster for health said "The self-ban" is among ways they are working towards improving the quality of health service delivery at all levels in the country.  She further added that her ministry officials will be deliberating on how to implement and enforce the ban, with a first step of fitting all healthcare facilities with office telephones for staff to use.

Meantime health workers in Uganda decry of poor pay and working in a rotten environment especially in government facilities.

Records show that nearly 80% of government health practitioners operate private clinics within their working environment vicinity.
