Allow me to share this personal story that happened to me. By now, everyone is angry about how a Chinese doctor was forcefully removed from a United Airlines flight randomly while they broke his jaw and caused him to bleed badly, despite fully paying his seat and doing nothing, just because they had to board another employee!

So let me tell you a personal story that illustrates the huge difference between consumer rights in the EU vs in the USA. I once was boarding a transit flight from Belgium to Norway on Brussels Airlines. They asked for someone to volunteer and give up their seat because a whole family needs to fly but one family member cannot get a seat, so I decided to volunteer my seat to help that family, not knowing what I was about to get. This is what happened next!
One of the employees walked me to a customer service desk, and the first thing they did, they gave me an envelop with 250 Euro in cash! (I only paid 38 Euro for that flight by the way :) ) Then they showed me a group of hotels, and asked me, which hotel would you like to stay in tonight? And which flight do you want to take back to Oslo? You can choose any flight and any hotel that is convenient to you, and you get full buffet breakfast, lunch, and dinner while staying here! :)
Why? Is the airline being so nice? Well, it's because in the EU, there are very strong laws that protect people from companies. In the US, it is the complete opposite. The laws favour companies over people, and the only way for a person to get their rights is to go and sue in court, but in Europe, there are mechanisms to protect people even without going to court. That's one of the many reasons why I left the terrible US and moved to Europe. I pray the doctor gets well soon and gets his full compensation back from that evil money-thirsty airline!
