{UAH} One of these days Rwanda will claim our Field Marshall Idi Amin

By Joachim Buwembo

One of these days Rwanda will claim our Field Marshall Idi Amin and build an Amin Museum which will attract a million visitors per year. And they would be justified if they did it because we aren't doing it. If you have read my commentaries which have been running in the media for the past 23 years, you might have read me saying the following things several times. I will say them again because Ugandans are increasingly demanding better organisation and promotion of the tourism sector. Handling tourism seriously and creatively can drive development quickly because its earnings are more spread out in the society than in any other sector. Our country can make a killing if any of the following 5 are keenly exploited, WITHOUT EVEN INCLUDING THE BIG GAME WILDLIFE WHICH WE HAVE IN ABUNDANCE:
1. There is only one source of the world's one longest river. We have so neglected it that other countries are even trying to create 'alternative' sources of the Nile!!!
2. The largest concentration of bird species in a small area.
3. A fifth of this country is open fresh water with some incredibly beautiful sites in western Uganda (did I hear most crater lakes were sealed off for private fish farming), incredible sites along the rivers for water sport. We have the 'hardest drop' of water where the whole Nile is squeezed through a mere six metres at Murchison Falls.
4. Two thirds of Man's closest cousins are in Uganda (though most of the world believes they are ALL in Rwanda)
5. Our historical strongmen Mwanga II and Idi Amin have created such a strong brand that we have failed to exploit. (And we now delude ourselves that four million people come to Namugongo on 3rd June, with clergymen also promoting the lie. If they are four million then they are local and too poor constitute serious earning).
UTB can prioritise one of the five per year.
AND UGANDA ENJOYS TWO SPECIAL FACTORS: A CENTRAL LOCATION ON THE CONTINENT AND CONSTANT WEATHER WHICH MAKES ALL ITS ATTRACTIONS AVAILABLE 12 MONTHS A YEAR.
