{UAH} Fraud charge Greenwich councillor to appear at crown court in September

Frank Mujabi,/ Akim Jags Odong

Look at this Nigerian girl who faces a possible jail term for fraud. She had a promising political career and was being looked at as the next MP for Woolwich, to replace a long serving retiring Labour MP in one of the safest seats in the country. And at only 29, she would have had a long career as Woolwich hardly ever changes its Mps, they tend to serve for life. This habit of making fraudulent applications for Council housing is very common among Nigerians and Ugandans have also copied the idea. Some people can fraudulently own 3  or more council properties, and become instant millionaires when they buy these properties from the council at 40% less than the market price and then become landlords, and in the process worsening the housing crisis that most local authorities face. But in her case, it was so stupid because she is in the public eye- all her opponents and enemies are watching her every move- she should have been aware that getting council tenancies using proxies or by concealment can be very easily dug up if you are in the public eye. A landlord will always be in conflict with the tenant, and thats where most problems begin. I dont know whats wrong with us Africans. She is not the only African Mp in trouble. Another Nigerian MP, for Peterborough, also a woman, is also now currently facing criminal charges for making someone else take the rap for a speeding offence- police claim she was the one driving when her car was caught speeding- a claim she denies.

Greenwich councillor Tonia Ashikodi has been bailed to appear at crown court next month on two charges of fraud and one charge of perverting the course of justice.

Ashikodi, 29, appeared at Bexley Magistrates Court this morning alongside her father, Tony Ashikodi, 49, after an investigation into her council tenancy and the ownership of private properties.

The Glyndon ward representative, who lives in Plumstead, is charged with two counts of fraud by misrepresentation in applications to Greenwich Council for housing in October 2008 and May 2012. She is also charged with perverting the course of justice in May 2018.

Tony Ashikodi, who lives in Thamesmead, is charged with perverting the course of justice at the same time.

Both spoke only to confirm their names, addresses and dates of birth.

Cases from Bexley are usually sent to Woolwich Crown Court, however, lawyers for both Greenwich Council – which is bringing the case – and the Ashikodis asked that the hearing be switched to Inner London Crown Court because of Tonia Ashikodi's position as a Greenwich councillor.

They have been given unconditional bail until 17 September, when they are due to appear at crown court.
