Heavy rainfall, hailstorm leave Kampala dwellers stranded

Heavy rainfall accompanied by hailstorms and gusty winds that poured on Tuesday afternoon left most of Kampala dwellers stranded for hours.

The rainfall which started at about 1.40pm to 3.00pm caused floods that made it difficult for pedestrians and motorists to move freely.

The strong winds forced some motorist to park on the road due to poor visibility.

Earlier reports indicated that some makeshifts and temporary structures were being knocked down amid rising fears of flooding, especially in low-lying areas of Kampala city.

According to the Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) statement read by the State minister for Environment, Dr Mary Kitutu on September 12, there is an increased likelihood of above normal rainfall over most parts of Uganda and near normal rainfall in most parts of Karamoja and southern cattle corridor.

Above normal pattern happens when rainfall received in a particular season exceeds the usual rains received in a place while as normal, is the total usual rainfall in a season in a given place.

Below normal on the other means the total rainfall during the season is less than the usual rains received in a place.

September to December constitutes the second major rainfall season in most parts of the country.
