{UAH} My best story: How Muslim helped start Catholic Church
The story titled, 'How a Muslim helped start Catholic Church in Uganda' (Daily Monitor, February 22) is, in my view, one of the best contributions the Daily Monitor has highlighted this year.
We grew knowing this site and the Muslim woman, Ms Nusura Namutebi, working at Rubaga Cathedral. But until now, the site had never got the publicity it desired.
The only site hosting religious temples adjacent to each other is Antakya in southern Turkey, a mosque shares a wall with a Catholic church.
Actually, it was a Muslim cleric who took us on tour of the church as the priest was not around. Nearby, there was a Jewish temple and all have had a harmonious existence for many years. In Antakya, there is a mosque (Habib Enejjar) housing a tomb of a christian saint.
To also have a similar site in Uganda, we must indeed recognise that we have a potential world heritage site that calls for urgent Unesco recognition. I am also informed that the site has utensils that were used by missionaries. I, therefore, call upon the Buganda Tourism Board and Uganda Tourism Board to develop the site in order to develop and promote the tourism sector in Uganda.
We are all grateful to the late Amir Sekikubo family for the hospitality accorded to the missionaries. We also extend our gratitude to the offsprings of Mzee Musa Senyondwa, who okayed the building of the church. It is because of him that Kitebi was made world heritage site.
