{UAH} Police must not transfer role to mobile money agents

By Michael Aboneka

There have been more than 37 cases of robbery of mobile money agents across the country. This comes barely a few months after the installation of street cameras in a bid to curb crime. It is sickening to see that crime continues despite billions of shillings spent on LDUs, installing cameras, etc.

There should be no reason for security lapses given all the measures in place that have cost taxpayers dearly.

Of recent, police have abdicated their responsibility of protecting citizens to asking them to protect themselves. The police have urged mobile money agents to hire personal guards from private security firms. This is deplorable given that the role of police and other security agencies is to protect citizens.

Secondly, mobile money agents are taxpayers too who deserve protection. So for police to ask them to ensure their own security is a vote of no confidence in the Force. The average cost of hiring a security guard and other accessories is about Shs400,000m per month! Where will the agents get such money? We need to get serious!
