{UAH} Dragon flies are some of the most colourful insects we have around
Dragon flies are some of the most colourful insects we have around. The name alone is likely to win the award for coolest insect name ever. On today's Nature and Wildlife we bring to you a list of the most interesting dragon flies facts.
1. There are over 5,000 species of dragonflies all over the world except in Antarctica. 450 of the species can be found in the United States and about 80 species in British Columbia.
2. A dragonfly is a very strong and very good flyer and can fly at speeds of 36 miles per hour. A dragonfly flaps its wings at about 30 beats per second.
3. They are expert fliers. They can fly straight up and down, hover like helicopters and even mate while flying. Their flight has inspired engineers who dream of making robots that fly like dragonflies.
4. If a dragonfly can't fly, it will starve because they only eat prey they catch while they are flying.
5. A dragonfly can't eat 30 to hundreds of mosquitoes per day making them natural mosquito control. Why don't you flood your home with dragonflies.😀
6. Relative to other insects, dragonfly sight is extraordinarily good. Nearly all aspect of dragonfly head is eye and this gives them nearly 360 degrees vision.
7. A human eye has just one lens but a dragonfly's eyes have about 30,000 lenses. They can see wider spectrum of colours than humans. This remarkable vision helps them detect movement of other insects and avoid collisions in flight. 😀
8. Dragonflies are such efficient hunters that they have a 95 per cent success rate in killing their prey. They normally rip their prey to shreds mid-flight with their sharp teeth.
9. Dragonflies lay their eggs in water and when the larva hatch, they live under water for up to 2 years. They will molt up to 17 times as they grow and transform into the dragonflies we see in the air.
10. Dragonflies have quite a number of predators ranging from insect-eating birds to frogs, big spiders and fish. To avoid being eaten, adult dragonflies will use their quickness and agility to out fly predators who are pursuing them.

"War is nothing but a continuation of political intercourse, with a mixture of other means. Man will never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest."
