{UAH} ONE YEAR AGO TODAY, ARUA BY-ELECTION MURDER OF YASSIN KAWUMA (RIP)

One year ago today, the nation was in shock and disbelief upon learning about the brutal events unfolding live in Arua town on the last day of campaigns for a by-election to replace a Member of Parliament, Honourable Ibrahim Abiriga (RIP), who himself had been publicly murdered in cold blood and in a hail of bullets along with his brother/bodyguard just a few months earlier as he drove home to break the Ramadhan fast. On 13th August 2018, the people of Uganda would see graphic pictures and live news coverage of the cold-blooded murder of Yassin Kawuma (RIP) as tweeted here (see picture) by a seemingly panicked Bobi Wine from an unknown hiding place. The musician-turned-legislator (and 33 others) would later be found, arrested, and tortured, leading to an international outcry. While free on bail, today they still face treason charges for allegedly breaking the rear window of Mr. Yoweri Museveni's bulletproof vehicle. However, to this day the perpetrators of both the Abiriga and Kawuma murders have not been brought to justice, and bask in broad daylight impunity. May God bless the souls of the departed, and everything possible should be done by every single Ugandan together with all genuinely concerned partners so that the country's politics do not continue down this disturbing path of senseless killings and untold suffering ever again. And the preservation of life and property should become a respected principle pillar of the functions of the state, as well as an agreed corner stone of general life in 21st century Ugandan society.
