WHAT IF I DON'T LIKE WHAT A MAGISTRATE/ JUDGE IS DOING, SHOULD I JUST THROW A BOTTLE OF EMPTY MINERAL WATER ON HIM/ HER:

Once upon a time, in a certain Court in a far far away land ( for today, let us use er er...Lacanpenino ).

Ok, once upon a time, in a certain Court in Lacanpenino, a one, Tim Tom was taken to Court for oba what, let's say he was taken to Court for cattle rustling.

While in Court, the Magistrate listened to his case and passed judgement saying Tim Tom was guilty. Tim Tom did not like what the Magistrate said so he picked an empty mineral water bottle and threw it at the Magistrate. Tim Tom used to play short-put during the Inter school competition. He had good aim;the mineral water bottle hit the Magistrate on her head. Poom!
Then he jumped up and held the Magistrate on the neck threatening to kill her before he was overpowered by the guards.

Now dear reader, I know you are asking yourself, are these facts for real? Maybe yes, maybe not.
But let's get to the point of this post which is contempt of Court

WHAT IS CONTEMPT OF COURT?

Under the law, simply put, Contempt of Court is when a person does something which disobeys or disrespects the laws, procedures and proceedings of court.

Sometimes contempt can be some complex things like trying to kill a judge, or some simple things like chewing gum in court, or using a mobile phone while Court is ongoing.

One day a journalist in Masaka was charged with Contempt when they were caught using a phone during a Court session.

But other things can lead one to be found in contempt of court also include;
• disobeying an order,
• failing to comply with a request,
• tampering with documents,
• withholding evidence,
• interrupting proceedings through one's actions or words,
• ridiculing and disrespecting court and its proceedings.

Under the laws of Uganda, contempt is one of those laws which is not really defined, and what is, or what is not Contempt depends on the Judge/ Magistrate.

What we suggest that when in Court, behave yourself...lay low like an envelope !! Ok, maybe not like an envelope, but we hope you get the point.
