Massive traffic diversion in western Uganda as Kazinga Channel Bridge suffers damage

KASESE – Motorists and passengers heading to Kasese District via Mbarara- Bushenyi-Rubirizi route are to set to suffer huge inconvenience after Kazinga Channel Bridge suffered damage.
The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has said Kazinga Channel Bridge, which connects greater Bushenyi districts to Kasese on Lakes George and Edward, has been damaged, meaning that traffic on the road will be diverted to Fort Portal—Kasese—Mpondwe route.
"Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) wishes to inform the general public that the bridge deck for Kazinga Channel Bridge on Ishaka—Katunguru—Kasese road has been damaged and the bridge will be closed to traffic immediately," a statement by UNRA issued on Tuesday, November 12, 2019, reads in part.

"The road users, especially of heavy trucks and buses, are advised to divert to the following roads; For traffic bound from Kampala to Mpondwe; use Kampala—Fortportal—Kasese—Mpondwe route. For traffic from Kampala to Ishasha; travel via Mbarara—Ishaka—Ishasha route. For traffic from Kasese to Mbarara; use Kasese—Fortportal—Kamwenge— Ibanda—Mbarara route. We appreciate your patience during the execution of remedial works," the statement adds.
Kazinga Channel in Uganda is a wide, 32-kilometre (20 mi) long natural channel that links Lake Edward and Lake George, and a dominant feature of Queen Elizabeth National Park.
