Seven men have been charged with taking part in a mob sexual assault of a young woman in Egypt after video of the New Year's Eve attack drew outrage on social media.

The video, whose authenticity has been confirmed by local police, shows dozens of men harassing and grabbing a screaming woman on a busy street in the northern town of Mansoura while others try to rescue her from the group.

Authorities said the 20-year-old victim had gone out with a friend Tuesday night when the mob crowded around her and began harassing her verbally. Bystanders tried to defend the woman, who was wearing a miniskirt and fur coat, but she ended up getting trapped between the two camps.

The video shows a chaotic scene, with some people holding sticks and jumping on top of a car, until several men who were apparently trying to help the victim eventually got her into the vehicle.

After reviewing surveillance footage from the area and interviewing witnesses, police identified seven suspects between 18 and 20 years old and said the investigation is still ongoing.

The despicable attack has reignited concerns over the high prevalence of sexual harassment in the conservative Muslim country. Mass sexual assaults are common during political protests and most Egyptian women don't even feel safe walking in the street, surveys have shown.

A 2013 United Nations report found that a whopping 99.3% of women had experienced some type of sexual harassment in Egypt, suggesting the problem is a serious epidemic far from being solved.

Another U.N. survey found that 60% of Egyptian men admitted to having sexually harassed a woman or girl at least once. The 2017 report includes a disturbing figure about overall violence against women: it found that more than 70% of men believe women should tolerate violence to keep the family together.
