{UAH} CONDUCT IN EMOTIVE SITUATIONS:

By Augustine Ruzindana

There are many people putting their lives on the line in different ways. In a period of heightened political activity, like the election period, there are many political people, parties and organizations putting their lives on the line. It's important to appreciate their efforts irrespective of whether we agree with them or not. It's their right and often it's their duty. Where they make mistakes or go into excesses we should admonish, advise and guide them. Often the law, rules and regulations are the guide but they may often be ignored or sidelined.
Similarly or conversely there are others putting their lives on the line as part of their day job, as part of their duty, like police, military, electoral officials, judicial and public officers. Irrespective of which side we are on, it's important to appreciate their roles and that often they will carry out orders and instructions whether they agree with them or not. Where they make mistakes or engage in excesses we should admonish and advise them and when or where necessary objectively condemn them.
Avoid excesses, especially in word, verbal or written- what is said cannot be unsaid and what's written cannot be unwritten. Also avoid burning bridges, you cannot forecast or foretell future situations (the future).
Especially for those in leadership positions, it is important for them to give correct and proper guidance in the various situations which face them or which they encounter in the various roles their people and themselves play. Sometimes protagonists may actually be on the same side and this may lost depending on the approach of either side.
This requires analysis and evaluation that lead to measured, informed and calculated actions. In a period of heightened activity, no one should lose what is on the horizon or the light in the tunnel; that everyone, irrespective on which side they are, have a stake in the stability and peace of the country. It is of course difficult to guarantee stability unless there is social justice, predicated on the rule of law and respect for human and fundamental rights.
At an appropriate time I will comment on the importance of internalization of the principle of social justice, especially for those in positions of public responsibility and its bearing on making the public interest primary in public life.
