Two arrested on allegations of torturing an old womanold woman being beaten

BUSHENYI – The Police in Bushenyi have arrested two people in connection with assault and causing gravious harm to an elderly woman.

According to the Uganda Police Spokesman Fred Enanga, the third and prime suspect, who was caught on video caning and torturing the elderly victim, is being hunted and has been identified as Keith.

Preliminary information indicates that on Sunday March 1st 2020 at around 6:30 pm, at Kyakebizi cell, Central Division, Ishaka-Bushenyi Municipality, Bushenyi district, the victim identified as Maria Kyomugisha, 66, was found in possession of a skeleton of a bird, in the banana plantation of Lukia Atwongeire. 

She was arrested and taken to Lukia's home where she was recorded on video, being beaten up and was thereafter taken to Bushenyi Police Station where a case of criminal trespass was preferred against her. 

The skeleton of the bird in the alleged witchcraft was also exhibited and she was however, released on bond as investigations progressed since no other complaint rose against her at this stage.

However on March 5th 2020, the shocking video went viral on social media, showing how the victim was viciously beaten and tortured before she was taken to the Police Station and it was at this time a case of torture was registered and relevant statements obtained. 

The victim was subjected to medical examination and her injuries classified as grievous harm. Police thereafter arrested the suspects who included Lukia Atwongeire aged 38 years and Vincent Kamukama aged 40 years hailing from the same address to help them in investigation.

Enanga said that Investigating officers have mounted efforts to arrest the person who was captured in the video beating and torturing the victim and the one who recorded the video as the hapless victim being tortured.

The suspects will soon appear in court to answer charges of assault and causing grievous harm to a person.
