{UAH} Covid 19 has given some of you the opportunity to shine using other people's misery

By Halima Kiberu via UAH Facebook group

Covid 19 has given some of you the opportunity to shine using other people's misery. If you knew how humiliating poverty is, you wouldn't take pictures of the people you are helping out with food and post them on social media, especially when you are also posing with them. It's not part of African culture to give and then tell everyone who the recipient is. In the olden days, families would share groceries, kids would be sent to ask for food next door and that would be kept between the two families.

what I've noticed from being a volunteer a lot of people suffer from the"what do I gain "mentality. They need to always make it about themselves and can't just let the buck end at simply helping another person which is why they resort to things like posting pictures.

It's like people want applause for helping. Unless one runs a foundation or they do their giving regularly and would need sponsors, then I don't see why we need to know that the person gave food to somebody. Government does it because people need pictures to believe that government is working. NGOs do it for evidence and auditing purposes. You can't buy food for someone once in 4 years and then make noise about it. The NGOs publicize so that they can get sponsors, government publicizes so that they can encourage private sector to do the same. `foundations do this work all the time, they are not using Covid 19 as an opportunity to shine.

But imagine now I go out and find a poor person, buy him food then take a picture of myself giving him food not even requesting additional help. Why am I doing that?
