{UAH} EDUCATION IN ANKOLE: Bweranyangi Girls' Secondary School (The Egrets)

From Mbarara High School, Bweranyangi is the second oldest school in Ankole region tracing its roots back to 1912 (108 years) and one of the first girls only school in the country. The school started in Kamukuzi as Mbarara Girls' Boarding School, and in 1914, with only 30 pupils the school was moved to Ruharo hill -the current seat of Ankole diocese where there was enough land to build more structures. Here it lived alongside Mbarara High School, a boys' school that had started in 1911. But because of the constant trouble from stubborn boys who would sneak into the girls' section at night and the need for enough space because the enrollment was increasing, plans were made to relocate it to Bweranyangi hill in Bushenyi. It moved in 1952 with Miss Mawer the white as the head teacher.

Bweranyangi remained a junior school (up to P6) until 1955 when junior secondary started and later senior secondary in 1965. Previously in 1964, the school was chosen by government among other 25 schools countrywide to be elevated into a senior secondary school. The young Yoweri Museveni (now president) taught at this school for 3 months during his S.6 vacation in 1966.

New buildings were erected in 1967 up to 1970 and gradually the semi-permanent buildings disappeared. In 1971, president Idi Amin arrived by helicopter and landed in the school hockey pitch to commission the new structures. The buildings included a library, physics, chemistry and biology blocks, two agriculture blocks, two home economics blocks, classrooms, dining room and kitchen, dormitories, toilets, headmistress's house and staff houses. From this point, Bweranyangi has never missed on the list of the best performing schools in the country for all the years.

With now over 100 years in existence, it is a present day modern school which provides excellent education to the Girl Child from all parts of the country. The School has O & A Levels teaching both Science and Arts Subjects.
