EDUCATION IN ANKOLE: Mbarara High School (Kyaapa)

In our series dubbed Education in Ankole, where we look at mighty schools that have shaped the future of many generations in the region, we kick of with Mbarara High School also known as Kyaapa. This mighty school is among the most prestigious schools in Uganda, owing to its excellent academic record over the years.

Established in 1911 by the Anglican Christian missionaries affiliated with the Church of England, Mbarara High School is arguably the oldest secondary school in Western Uganda. It has both ordinary level and advanced level classes with state of the art science laboratories and libraries.

Mbarara High school has sufficient facilities to accommodate up to 2,000 students: There are more than 13 dormitory blocks, 07 science laboratories, 3 ICT laboratories and 4 workshops for vocational subjects among others.

The school has many alumni, many of whom are active in Uganda's public and private sectors. The notable, among them include the following:

- YOWERI KAGUTA MUSEVENI, President of Uganda 1986–Present
- HON. AMANYA MUSHEGA, Former Secretary General of the East African Community
- GEN. ELLY TUMWIME, Minister of Security.
- ANDREW MWENDA, A popular journalist and founder of the Independent Magazine.
- GEN. SABITI MUZEYI, Deputy IGP
- KENNETH KIMULI (PABLO), Comedian, playwright.
- ZEDDY MARURU (Rip), former military pilot
- FRANCIS TAKIRWA, military officer
- TUMUSIIME RUSHEDGE, surgeon, pilot, novelist, cartoonist and newspaper columnist
- CHARLES OBOTH OFUMBI, Former Ugandan Interior Minister
