{UAH} Don’t you think it is a little weird that the United States has the most cases of this pandemic?
I can't agree. It seems to me that it was entirely predictable.
Americans have earned a reputation for being ignorant of science, compared to other developed nations, and disdainful of the opinions of experts. We rank about 45th in the world, right behind Turkey, in our acceptance of evolution, and government scientists have been forbidden to refer to rising sea levels or use the phrase "climate change" in their reports. One of our experts who has continually furnished reliable information to the public on the pandemic has received death threats and has had to request protection from U.S. Marshals.
We are one of the more populous countries in the world, and our citizens frequently engage in international travel. New York, one of our largest cities, is a major world financial hub. Our President imposed so-called "travel bans" that left plenty of exceptions. Over 40,000 people have traveled to and from China since his so-called "China travel ban."
Our President allowed the Office for Pandemic Response to be disbanded by his National Security Adviser and ignored intelligence from his own government warning that a pandemic was a risk. For nearly two months after we discovered our first COVID case, he continually downplayed the seriousness of the outbreak and even implied that going to work while infected was acceptable. Our Centers for Disease Control distributed a defective test and imposed bureaucratic rules that hobbled other labs and researchers for testing. We discovered our first COVID case the same day South Korea discovered theirs, but they quickly ramped up to testing 10,000 people a day, while we were still struggling to test hundreds. This article provides details:
We have fewer critical care beds than Italy, and we had a critical shortage of PPE for health care providers as well as ventilators. Our President hesitated, first, to invoke the Defense Production Act and then to apply it, because of lobbying from the business community. Our national stockpile of equipment and supplies was quickly exhausted, and the President let his unqualified son-in-law intervene to announce to state governors that the stockpile wasn't "theirs" but "ours," whatever that means.
America is capable of great things, and equally notable blunders. We were the nation who first went to the Moon, and we were also the nation who treated the world to the sight of Space Shuttle Challenger blowing up only minutes off the launch pad because of defective sealant rings—engineers had attempted to point this out the night before, but their concerns had been dismissed. That also is part of the American character.
The answer above is not exhaustive but represents major reasons why anyone might have seen this coming. I am not "connected" or privy to any "inside information," unlike Republican Senators selling their stock after classified briefings, but I realized in early February that I would do well to make a new will and wrote to my son that this whole thing might make it impossible for me visit him in Europe
