{UAH} A LETTER FROM A STUDENT AT MUBS TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF UGANDA
A LETTER FROM A STUDENT AT MUBS TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF UGANDA
Dear sir,
I write to you on behalf of all university students and on my own behalf.
On this long awaited day when our anxieties have built up to the bliss point, your excellency, I wish to put to your attention a few issues for your consideration.
My name is Hilary Tumusiime Charbel A.K.A Lary Chary. I am pursuing a bachelor's degree in transport and logistics management at Makerere University Business School.
Firstly, your excellency, I thank you for taking lead in the fight against this unprecedented war that came to us. Quickly you and your cabinet drafted the battle plans and executed them in the most surgical manner which has proved effective.
But we the students of this great nation wish to raise some issues;
We have been following all the communications you have made since the 18th of March 2020 when you read out the first guidelines that encompassed the closure of universities and in response we have really washed hands, stopped "sneezingyi out" and "coughingyi" in public, attempted to do 30 pushups daily as prescribed by your excellency, and so on but while listening to and watching your speeches we have patiently waited for our president to say something (a word of encouragement or a draft plan for the reopening of the schools/universities) to us the students in vain!
Mama Janet, the honorable minister of Education, gave very clear guidelines for the pre primary, primary and secondary schools including lessons via the media but as regards universty education, there was only a suggestion to read extensively which we are willing to do, but lack the necessary platforms like village libraries, internet connection and so on.
Your excellency, students in second year worry specifically about their internship programs and need your guidance on that. Internship is the course unit that not only equips a student with practical (hands on) skills but also raises his/her cumulative grade point aggregate (CGPA) since it carries the highest credit units. Internship or field study is normally done by second year students during the months of June and July.
Some, without excluding myself, would even dare to suggest that it would be good if the government availed an opportunity for universty students to take part in the fight against COVID 19, in line with their areas of interest, as their field study (internship). I for one would happily help in the planning of transport and logistical activities, those pursuing medicine, in the taking of samples, the statistics and economics student, in trend projection, finding ways how to keep our economy afloat, etc...
Students in year 3 on the other hand worry about the employment trends. "If employers are already laying off workers, will they be in the business of hiring new ones any soon?", one wonders.
They almost have an answer in the plans of government to; reactivate UDB in order to facilitate young entrepreneurs and SMEs, create more jobs by starting up or facilitating the start-up of new factories to produce PPE, salt, sanitizer, etc but all these arrangements have neither been specific nor clear enough to give our finalists the confidence they badly need.
Mr. President sir, we have a category of students, whose predicaments are not even education oriented. They thought it would be easy to handle the initial 30-days break as per the first guidelines you issued. However, the subsequent measures which involved the lock down and its extension, have not favoured them at all. They are stuck in hostel rooms and rentals and because of the way these hostels look on the outside, some students have not been considered by the task forces distributing food. Officers just skip the ereas in assumption that the inhabitants are well-off if there is even any.
It's my humble appeal therefore, your excellency, that as you speak to the nation next time, please speak to the university student, *THE UGANDA OF THE NEAR FUTURE*
Thank you Mr. President
Looking forward to your positive response.
Yours sincerely
TUMUSIIME HILARY CHARBEL
Chairman of the CONCERNED CITIZENS OF MUBS (CCM)
FOR GOD AND MY COUNTTY
