{UAH} Health benefits of Tamarind
Scientific name: Tamarindus indica

Local name:Chwa (Acholi),Enkooge(Luganda) Apeduru(Itesot), Emikooge(Runyoro-Rutooro)
Medicinal uses:
1.Scurvy: As a result of being rich in vitamin C, Tamarind helps in preventing and relieving scurvy. However, one must ensure that the herb doesn't dry and lose its antiscorbutic property like other fruits and vegetables.
2.Common Cold: The best remedy for a nasal blockage and cold is a hot clear soup called 'rasam'. It is made by mixing Tamarind, pepper and a teaspoon of ghee in boiling water.
3.Fevers: Tamarind is often used to relieve fever. A mixture made by boiling 30 grams of the fruit's pulp in half a litre of milk and adding dates, doves, sugar, cardamoms and a little camphor works wonders in reducing fever.
4. Dysentery: Pulverised seeds of the tamarind fruit, when taken in doses of 6.25 decigrams, with the same quantity of cumin and sugar thrice a day aid in relieving dysentery. Moreover, the aforementioned remedial drink for fever also provides relief from dysentery.
5. Burns: By burning the leaves of tamarind tree over fire in a covered pot, crushing them into a fine powder and mixing it in gingelly (til) oil, and applying the mixture over a wound, the burn gets relieved within a matter of days. It also protects the wound from moisture and germs .These valuable leaves also prevent oedema leaving the skin healthy and radiant.
Inflammation of Joints: Tamarind leaves aid in reducing swelling and pain of inflamed joints. They are crushed and mixed in water before being applied on the affected areas.
6. Sore Throat: Gargling with tamarind water gives significant relief from a sore throat. Gargle water made with powdered dry leaves or a brew made with the bark of the tree, both prove miraculous in relieving sore throats.
Additional medicinal uses:
Tamarind is known to enhance appetite, improve digestion and prevent constipation.
On heating the bark with salt in an earthen vessel, an ash is obtained; doses of which give relief from stomach aches and cramps amongst other digestion related problems.
Tamarind fruit pulp is most often eaten directly or soaked in water and the extract drunk or mixed with other foods like porridge.
Many communities encourage drinking the extract from the fruit pulp to reduce the risk of heart attack and other heart-related diseases in humans.
It's also given as an energizer and for weight loss in case one is obese.
The fruit syrup can be mixed with sugar and used to ease skin-burning sensation.
The fruit pulp is used for seasoning, as a food component and in juices. Its fruit is regarded as a digestive, carminative, laxative, expectorant and blood tonic.
Traditional healers use the pounded paste mixture of fruit pulps, leaves, flowers of Tamarindus indica to relieve pain by applying it over swollen and painful joints.
The fresh stem bark and fresh leaves of Tamarindus indica are used to make a decoction which is mixed with potash for the treatment of stomach disorder, general body pain, jaundice, yellow fever and as a blood tonic and skin cleanser. A root decoction is administered as a cure for coughs and fevers and also to treat menorrhagia.
Side effects:
Avoid use of tad incase you have diarrhoea
It is asafe to use in children.
Pregnant and lactating mothers should take it along side other foods.
Do not take tamarind along side other drugs for example it reduces the bio availability of asprin.
