ARMY, FUFA AND FISHERMEN; WHO WILL MISS BRIG. COLONEL BELL TUSHABE???

CHANGE OF GUARDS - Brig. Colonel Jackson Bell Tushabe died today aged 61.  Born in Buyanja, Kyeizoba Sub-County in Igara county, Bushenyi, he relocated to Bubare, Kashari in Mbarara.  He was one of the top commanders of Museveni's Bush War having joined in 1982 as revealed by his Army Number, RO/0079.  After taking power in 1986, Brig. Colonel Bell Tushabe held different command positions, the highest being Division Commander in Northern, Eastern and Western regions of Uganda.  He was placed on Katebe (rendered inactive) at the rank of Colonel, in the early 1990s in a wide scheme that targeted the Bush War Commanders whose loyalty to Museveni was questionable.  That was during the time several such Commanders were suspected to be  behind Gen. Ssejusa's alleged 'rebellious' schemes.

He took to fishing at Gaba landing site from where he became so popular with the fishing community that he even founded their football club, Victors Football Club.  The club became so successful that it twice represented Uganda in the CAF and twice won the Uganda Cup.  The successful management of his club propelled him to serve in different positions of the country's football governing body, FUFA.  From FUFA Vice President in charge  of Competitions,  Chairman  Super Division Club Association, during 2005 - 2009, to Chairman of the Security Committee during the 2012 CECAFA tournament in Kampala.

Having held the rank of Colonel for almost three decades, in February 2019 he was promoted to the rank of Brigadier but with no substantive military service assignment.  Around later 1990s he was named the Reserve Force Commander for Central Region - an empty position meant to dupe him and the public.  During elections, he would be expected to carry out political mobilisation of support for Museveni using all means including violence but Col. Bell stayed clear of such.  The assignment did not deter him from concentrating on what he liked most and where he was most valued - fishing and football activities.

The country's football fraternity and the Gaba landing site fishing community are mourning the demise of Col. Bell Tushabe.  The army has taken the body of Brig. Bell Tushabe to the military hospital and as usual is to take over the burial arrangements.  It wants to steal the show but it will, as had been the recent case with Brig. Kasirye Gwanga find an uphill task profiling Cool. Bell's military service record.  It will hypocritically eulogize him as a Comrade and a Patriot.
